About Us
In 2016, Christopher E. Doerr, DO founded Better Bone Clinic because he frequently encountered patients with fractures (or history of fractures) that reflected an osteoporotic component to their troubles. He had been asked by another doctor to manage a patient’s osteoporosis after a compression fracture, but refused, assuming others were following the patient’s bone density. He quickly discovered that with all the other medical issues primary care doctors must manage with their patients, bone density/osteoporosis monitoring was often further down the list. Also, the medications and management choices have multiplied in recent years, such that it was hard to keep up unless really concentrating in the field. It also was apparent that patients, upon receiving the diagnosis of osteoporosis were either nonchalant about the condition (not knowing one fall could change the course of their life forever) or terrified to think they were a walking disaster waiting to happen. After speaking with a number of local primary doctors, orthopedic surgeons, pain specialists and rheumatologists, Chris was encouraged to begin Better Bone Clinic with a balanced and positive approach to diagnosing, and treating osteoporosis with the most current medications and therapies. A distinct additional approach is longitudinal monitoring of not only patients’ bone density, but monitoring their functional status with fall-risk evaluations composed of balance, strength and gait testing. If these tests show an increased risk of falling, intervention in the form of physical therapies to reduce this risk is necessary. In some cases, additional studies or even referral to ortho or neurosurgery to consider surgery for a bad knee or spinal stenosis may be necessary in order to stay balanced, functional and safe.
